Retirement Health Care Costs: A Ticking Time Bomb

Retirement Health Care Costs: A Ticking Time BombHealth care costs for middle-income retirees are on a path to exceed Social Security benefits, according to a newly created Retirement Health Care Cost Index, by HealthView Services.

A recent Investment News article reported that retirement health care costs will increase from 69 percent of Social Security benefits for a couple retiring next year to 98 percent of Social Security benefits for a healthy couple retiring 10 years from now. For couples retiring two decades from now, the gap will be even more dramatic. Those couples will need 127 percent of average Social Security benefits to cover their health care costs in retirement.

Retirement health care costs measured by the index include all Medicare premiums and Medigap premiums, as well as out-of-pocket costs, including co-pays not covered by Medicare.

The Lighter Side of Living

Reaching the end of a job interview, the human resources officer asked a young engineer fresh out of MIT, "And what starting salary were you looking for?"

The engineer replies, "In the region of $125,000 a year depending on the benefits package."

The interviewer inquires, "Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50 percent of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?"

The engineer sits up straight and says, "Wow! Are you kidding?"

And the interviewer replies, "Yeah, but you started it."
