The importance of speaking up!

When it comes to addressing health concerns, dynamics can be complicated and may involve anxiety, lack of understanding or even intimidation over seeking medical attention. Those elements can get in the way of effective communication; however, in matters of your health, it is essential to put all obstacles aside and speak up on your behalf.

Share the big picture

If you do not have an established relationship with a physician who knows your background, medical history, stressors and current life season, it is beneficial to share as much of that information as you can. According to Dr. Jacqueline Chadwick, family practice physician and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, University of Arizona College of Medicine, obtaining a good patient history will lead 80 to 90 percent of the way to a diagnosis. “Patients should tell their physician everything,” says Chadwick, “including things that may not seem important like taking vitamins, aspirin or herbs.” The more that’s known about the big picture, the more readily pertinent factors can be identified.

Obtain information

If you have concerns or need more understanding, speak up! “Don’t be afraid to ask the questions,” Chadwick encourages. “Ask to have explained what you don’t understand.” Take the time to obtain the necessary answers. If need be, ask to make a follow up appointment to discuss the item further or request written material or a reference to where you can obtain more information.

Say the hard thing

Chadwick believes the biggest red flag areas where it’s vital for a patient to speak up are “personal areas…domestic violence, sexual abuse, or fear for your safety in any way, shape or form.” Be willing to tell your doctor the hard things, including whether you are dabbling in drugs or abusing alcohol. Remember the doctor patient privilege and be honest. It’s your health – take responsibility for it.
