Getting the Most Long-Term Care for Your Money

A recent Wall Street Journal article reported that getting the best price for long-term care was just like shopping for a car or house — you’ve got to haggle.

With the cost of LTC steadily increasing, it’s no wonder people want the best deal possible.

The national median monthly rate for a one-bedroom, assisted-living unit hit $3,261 — a 2.4-percent increase from 2010, according to the Journal article. That typically involves hands-on personal and medical care for those who can’t function independently but who don’t require the constant care of a nursing home.

During a terrible storm, all the highway signs were covered with snow. The following spring, the state decided to raise all the signs 12 inches at a cost of $6 million.

"That’s an outrageous price!" quipped a local farmer. "But I guess we’re lucky the state handled it instead of the federal government."

"Why’s that?" his friend asked.

"Because knowing the federal government," the farmer said, "they would have decided to lower the highways."
